Newport’s Fifth Ward neighborhood is surrounded by the vivacious shops and restaurants of Thames St, the allure of the Bellevue Avenue Mansions and Gilded Age Estates, and historic Fort Adams State Park. Located South of Wellington Avenue, the Fifth Ward is an easy walk or bike ride to most Newport amenities. King Park is a hidden gem of Newport. The Fifth Ward Little League plays here overlooking the harbor. Sunset at King Park is spectacular year-round with the backdrop of the Newport Bridge. The Waterfront Concert series has hosted outdoor musicians under the gazebo here during the warm, weekend afternoons of the summer. The iconic Rochambeau Memorial statue was erected at King Park in 1934. King Park is located right next to Ida Lewis Yacht Club, named after Idawalley Zoradia Lewis who was a young lighthouse keeper in Newport who gained notoriety noted for her heroism in rescuing people from the seas.
The Fifth Ward perks don't stop there! Spencer Park is adjacent to King Park. Many locals enjoy walking their dogs in the open grassy space of Spencer Park. Morton Park also has a wonderful playground and open field. The local kickball league has organized games here since 2011. All three parks are part of 19 parks across Aquidneck Island under the conservation care of the Aquidneck Island Land Trust. Rounding out the parks located in the Fifth Ward is Ballard Park. Carol C. Ballard, purchased and donated the thirteen-acre site to the City of Newport in 1990 for the purpose of “maintaining the property in its natural, scenic and open condition” for the enjoyment of Newport’s residents. Rogers High School is located across the street.
Real estate in the fifth one is a great mix between traditional and contemporary. Architectural styles in the Fifth Ward are unique and varied. The Carey School condominiums are a great example of high-end condos that were converted from an Elementary school. Homes here are desirable for their quintessential neighborhood-like feel, while still maintaining close proximity to downtown.
